So we got a call from a local business who was having problems with a computer connected on their network. When we arrived we quickly located the problem, internal Cat 5 cable had been run externally and the UV in the sunlight had broken down the insulation thus letting rain and moisture into the cable and shorting the conductors.
Replacing with external grade Cat 5 cable has sorted the problem.
